Language learning

Language and the importance of effective communication

Language comes from deep within us and is a reflection of the culture we were born into. Not only does the way we choose our words affects the way we think – the other way round is also true – but it can also significantly impact on the results we get when we communicate with other people.

The good news is that nowadays there are many tools available to increase your potential as a communicator in order to achieve your goals in the most effective way.

One of the most useful ones is called Neuro Linguistic Programming.

Why learn a second language?

I find that, when learning a second language, most people don’t fully appreciate the range of advantages that it can offer.

In fact I believe that learning and, in particular, language learning:

  • can be extremely empowering
  • can be fun and can be learnt more easily in a relaxed way
  • opens up your horizons and your job opportunities
  • helps you to make friends
  • enhances the linguistic function of the brain

The truth is, once you have learned a new language, you will never be the same person again. The skill of speaking a second language helps you to see things differently, because while you are writing, hearing and experiencing a new language, you are also absorbing a new culture. So you will be able to better understand and appreciate people from other countries and become a much more effective communicator.

As a linguist and a language enthusiast, I have always been fascinated by the way my physiology and my mental approach change when I switch from one language to another. Not only does the tone and the speed of my voice change, but also my whole attitude and behaviour. This is because each language has its own beauty and style, its accepted behaviour, its do’s and don’ts and its own individual richness of images and expressions that are so unique that are sometimes impossible to translate perfectly in another language.

Whether you are learning a language for business or pleasure, please remember that a second language will give precious skills that will remain with you for the rest of your life.
